V for Vendetta

Forget the past and you are doomed to repeat it

Remember remember the 5th of November the gunpowder, treason, and plot. If on March 15th 2006 you were to ask most Americans, "Who is Guy Fawkes?" And the odds of getting more than, "Huh? or Who? or I have no idea" wouldn't have been very likely. After March 16th when V for Vendetta was released you could have run into a dozen Guy Fawkes afficianados that seemed to know everything on the subject.
As funny as it is to think that such an action based movie could be called a lesson in British history, the movie is exactly that. It has a beautiful story line, sort of a British "1984" wrapped around the true story of Guy Fawkes who attempted to destroy Parliament by planting a large ammount of explosives in the basement.
The story is well told, the action is intense, and the character development is incredible. The change that Nathalie Portman shows, (not just in the fact that she allowed her head to be shaved for this movie) really shows that she hasn't been pegged as a stereotypical character after appearing in the new Star Wars trilogy.
Hugo Weaving puts on a dazzling performance while you never really see his face as he wears the Guy Fawkes mask throughout the majority of the movie, and the one chance where you could see him without the mask he stayed at a distance and wore a false beard.
The movie really stands out a cut above most releases that year.
