Shutter Island

It was a good movie, but so disappointing

So, disappointing.

Sure, the movie's "good" in the sense that the whole course of watching the movie is an enjoyable experience. It has very tense moments, parts where you feel like you yourself are paranoid (not a good stoney movie), and great surreal moments. The actors are all good; the direction is good; the plot is good.

But the ending is so disappointing.

Not the very ending, mind you. If you do shell out $11 to see this raging disappointment, pay attention to what DiCaprio says at the very end of the film and ask yourself "Did the plan work?" I'm sure you will have a very different answer.

Why was it so disappointing? Easy. All the elements were in there to set up this miraculous spectacle of an ending. Each element that was introduced could be interpreted in a number of different ways. The ending they picked to use was lazy, the easiest to use, and contrived. In fact, it seemed like more of a stretch to give that ending than what we had been building up to for the entire movie.

But maybe there is nothing new under the sun.
