Review - Fantasia/2000 (1999)

After almost sixty years, audiences were finally able to experience the wonders of “Fantasia” all over again. Walt Disney’s project was finally continued with “Fantasia/2000.”

You can tell while watching this version of the classic concept that it was not made just for money. They really put time and effort into making it just as good as the original. While I don’t think it really does measure up, each piece is just as wondrous and beautiful as before.

“Pomp and Circumstance” brought back what “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” which incidentally was included, did for “Fantasia,” while “Rhapsody in Blue” used simplicity to its fullest to bring its masterpiece to life. “Firebird Suite – 1919,” the finale piece, is easily the most vivid of the group, bringing a very beautiful arrangement to a perfect close.

While I don’t think “Fantasia/2000” has the same heart “Fantasia” did, it stands on its own grounds as a modern look at the project that I hope will continue, as long as they don’t start slacking off on us.
