Man and a Woman, A ( homme et une femme, Un )

As powerful as it (probably) was 40 years ago...

I'd hate to know what Lelouch's personal life was like because considering the depth of this, he probably had an excessive amount of troublesome relationships. There's a few technical choices, specifically the music that remind me very much of Punch-Drunk Love but I think this may even be more successful in the portraits it paints. For the first twenty minutes, the interaction between the two main characters is just completely awkward. There's moments throughout the movie much like this. When we see them meet on the beach it's one of most rewarding moments I've seen in any film ever. For the moments that are tedious and boring, they are made up for with the ones that tender and intimate. I'd say the sex scene is probably right up there with the one in Don't Look Now but the editing isn't nearly as sharp. No way is that a knock against this film though, because considering when it was made, it is incredibly moving and effective. It's one of the most "equal" films I've ever seen in the way that it allows us to see into both characters. Not just one or the other, and not just looking from the outside in.
