Johnny Handsome

A Handsome Late 80s Noir!

If you like your 1980s film noir dark, violent, and gritty, with competent direction and good action, then you are in for a treat.

Walter Hill is a veteran director of this sort of material, so the movie does exactly what it ought to, and fires on all cylinders.

However, what really sets this movie apart from similar genre films that came out around the same time is that it has some heavies giving good performances (some fairly early in their careers) including Mickey Rourke, Ellen Barkin, Morgan Freeman, Forest Whitaker, and Lance Henriksen.

Mickey Rourke especially goes for broke with his nuanced portrayal of a deeply deformed man who gets a second shot at revenge after extensive plastic surgery.

Look for Morgan Freeman in a standout role as well, as the suspicious lieutenant who doesn't believe that Mickey's changed visage hides anything but a cold desire for getting even.

Highly recommended!
