Poltergeist premtpts many horror films on a grandiose scale. Pulse, White Noise, and the Ring are but a few that deal with the same subject matter, and they didn't make an appearance until a decade plus after. Poltergeist begins surprisingly as an urban family comedy and then dwelves into a unique journey filled with horror and thrills. The special effects don't all stand the test of time, particularly the maggot scene, but the overall product is a definite must for horror fans.
