It's Idris Elba vs a man eating lion. And it's better than it should be. Thanks to Elba and the cast taking it seriously, there's no cheeky meta-humor. The lion attack scenes are not badly staged and although it's a shame the lion is all CGI, it's not that jarring given the smaller budget. If there is one drawback to the movie, it's that the actresses playing Idris Elba's children are very annoying and unsympathetic. The one playing the older sibling is especially obnoxious. You almost want the rogue lion to eat them.
Those expecting a JAWS level thriller or something as good as the underrated 1996 film THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS will be disappointed. But for those looking for an unpretentious B-movie creature feature, this is a good pick.
