Escape to Victory

How to combine The Great Escape & the World Cup.

Sports drama taking place in an unusual setting- Nazi Germans?!? Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone play Allied POWs forced to play against a German team in a Paris soccer game, ostensibly for their freedom if they win.
It’s certainly original for the sports genre but it doesn’t quite go all the way. A romance subplot feels obligated because that’s been in other war films, not due to being organic.
There’s an implication that recreational participation overcomes prejudice with the presence of famed soccer player Pele (who is good in the movie). Or that appreciation for good sportsmanship overwhelms nationalism.
Michael Caine is very good as the leader of the Allied players. It’s kind of weird seeing Stallone in this. The late Max von Sydow has a great role as the German officer slowly warming up to supporting the protagonists.
It’s imperfect but interesting and the climactic game has exciting moments.
