The Last Valley

A thoughtful and contemplative historical drama anchored by two great lead performances.
Michael Caine and Omar Sharif play two medieval soldiers, one a cynic and the other an idealist, whose band stumble upon a quiet valley untouched by war. The pair work together to keep the peace between the suspicious villagers and their warlike companions.
The script is nuanced enough to offer a perspective on situation from most of the characters. Granted there are one dimensional villains that must be dispatched in obligatory action scenes.
Shot on location in England, the movie looks beautiful and John Barry’s acclaimed score is magnificent. If there’s any complaint, the ending does feel rushed but it’s not enough to ruin the movie.
