Rami Malek is excellent as legendary musician Freddie Mercury. The movie surrounding him is just okay. It starts out well enough and the other band members aren't fleshed out all that well. But they all have this fun rapport with each other. It's always a pleasant nostalgia trip whenever they play any one of their hit songs.
The second act is a major chore to get through as it feels the need to draw out every major event in both Mercury's life juxtaposed with the highs and lows for Queen's output. There's been accusations that the film took too much dramatic license. Perhaps it did, but it would be forgiven if the film didn't rely on tropes you saw before in other musical biopics.
THe film is made redeemable by Malek's powerhouse performance and the film's ace up its sleeve. The third act final concert bit is an invigorating crescendo of a finish that wakes the movie and the audience up.
