Sweet Country

Sweet Country, Bitter countrymen.

Bleak, solemn, and well shot drama about an aboriginal farmhand who flees into the Australian Outback after killing a white farmer in self defense.
Newcomer Hamilton Morris is quite good as the fugitive Sam Kelly and Bryan Brown is arrogance incarnate as the bigoted and determined policeman leading the hunting party. Sam Neill has a quietly dignified performance as a sympathetic minister.
The Australian locations look inhospitable and treacherous, the perfect place to hide. But these three men's destinies collide in unexpected and tragic fashion as the deeds of Sam Kelly's past catch up to him.
SWEET COUNTRY is not an easy movie to sit through. It's quite grim and dour with the only source of humor being at the expense of a senile aboriginal worker.
