King of Kings (1961)

Nicholas Ray tackles the New Testament in KING OF KINGS, a big splashy costume epic about Jesus Christ (played by a dashing looking Jeffrey Hunter). The film is interesting because it devotes arguably more time to the enemies of early Christianity such as Herod, Pilate, and Salome. There aren't many big name stars aside from Hunter and an appearance by Robert Ryan as John the Baptist. This works to the film's advantage as it enables a stronger emphasis on the story and various subplots. The production looks great with colorful costumes, gigantic sets, and eye catching scenery. Certainly worth a look for those fascinated by the genre or looking for a good old fashioned epic.
