In the Heart of the Sea

Whaling Expedition

'In the Heart of the Sea' is based on the true story that in turn was the basis for the popular novel 'Moby Dick'. It does have a biographical feel to the proceedings, in some regard, but this is also trying to be a rousing sea-going adventure at the same time. It's a solid narrative, from beginning to end. You have one of the survivors of the voyage (now in old age) relating the experience to the man who would craft the 'Moby Dick' story from parts of the tale. The actual whaling expedition is played out by some strong actors. Solid direction from Howard made the dangers of sea travel more prevalent. And the effects of the whales were convincing enough. So why was I lacking engagement? I honestly don't know. Outside of all the characters lacking depth, there's not much wrong being done here. I saw everything I expected. I just didn't feel much while watching.
