Yes, it was a book first. Then, it was made into a movie in the 1920's. And then, it was made into another movie in the 1990's. The '90s version is one I saw, and I never read the book.

Oh, and I think you should give Westerns another try. I recommend "the Last of the Mohicans" and "Unforgiven." I think you'll enjoy them because they were made in the '90s. So, they're not your typical, 1950s-style Western.

I've never actually seen Seven all the way through. Which is weird since I'm a Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt fan. But, I did see the Illusionist, and thought it was a very underrated movie. I'll have to send you friend request now.
