Plot: The Warrens have all but retired from the business of looking into supernatural events, mostly due to Ed's heart health, as they stick to lectures even if the interest seems to be waning. Their daughter, Judy, is in a serious relationship with former police officer Tony, even as she begins having some unexpected episodes much like Lorraine. Everything changes, however, when the Smurl family in West Pittston, Pennsylvania begins to experience frightening occurrences. When close friend Father Gordon dies shortly after visiting the Smurl household, Judy is drawn to figure out why - and the Warrens follow, not knowing the answer is connected to their own past. -- Chris Kavan

While The Conjuring universe has never reached the heights of the original film, at least this final entry (at least with the original cast of Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson) packs enough scares to make it worthwhile and also pays homage to the earlier entries with some fine cameos. The focus on the Warrens themselves is actually a nice change of pace and makes this more emotional rather than straight-up jump scares. And it's a lot better than the more recent spinoffs for sure.
