Violence overkill and under-lit speechifying overwhelms this conclusion to the Fallen franchise. Morgan Freeman and Nick Nolte do lend some much needed gravitas but it’s not enough to elevate the film above its workmanlike roots.
The minimal cgi is dodgy and the fight scenes are lackluster compared with the glorious bloodshed in the first two movies. Those aren’t good either but they’re more fun to watch. There is one solid action scene that involves a nighttime semitrailer chase.
Once upon a time, Gerard Butler was gonna be Hollywood’s next big thing. Now he’s reduced to a C-list Russell Crowe churning out schlock like Gods of Egypt or Geostorm. Twenty years from now, film historians will ask the question: What happened to King Leonidas?
