Carroll Baker's reputation as a sex-symbol was both a blessing and a curse. For one thing, she could act (as she proved to the Academy by acting in Baby Doll), but she was mostly given uninteresting roles. Sylvia was one of the few good roles she had. Every time there is a fade out, something dark and dangerous is happening. Very intriguing, very terribly traumatizing for the character, which makes for a great psycho-drama.
