The script could use some work, and Prince is better suited as a musical performer than an actor, but "Purple Rain" is a movie you watch for the songs which are composed with enough flair to pull this pop culture phenomenon out of any dramatic deficit the thin writing and unseasoned star put it in.

Probably the greatest movie soundtrack ever made, and one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I gave the movie the the extra star because of the music. Avoid the movie, buy the soundtrack.
