An anti-death penalty activist convicted of the rape and murder of a colleague offers a final interview with a female reporter in the hope she will uncover the truth about what happened. Alan Parker directing Kevin Spacey and Kate Winslet sounds like a dream ticket, but this overly contrived slice of soulless, mechanical pap completely fails to live up to expectation. The reek of mainstream Hollywood permeates the whole thing, from Spacey's unsympathetically pretentious character through to the inappropriately glib soundtrack that sounds like it would be more at home in a US sitcom. Winslet's character is a walking cliche and the film is punctuated by irritating directorial gimmicks that just grate on the nerves. David Gale (Kevin Spacey) is a brilliant teacher on death row, reveals his story to Bitsey Bloom (Kate Winslet), a journalist from a news magazine. He discloses his encounter with Berlin (Rhona Mitra), who accuses him of rape. Constance Harraway (Laura Linney), David’s friend, is raped and murdered. it lacked the score and proper storytelling to make it effective. One scene you have Constance in a hospital, next on a tape being suffocated on a plastic bag. Best lines: David – “Living by your wants will never make you happy; what it means to be fully human is to strive to live by ideas and ideals and not to measure your life by what you ever attain in terms of your desires but those small moments of integrity, compassion, rationality, even self-sacrifice.” Spacey was …
