I thought this movie was great. It's impossible to imagine a world in which this would be a true story.... Well, ALMOST!

I found this to be an extremely depressing film. With no real resolution. Still I'm glad I watched it. If for no other reason than it was Meryl Streep's first film. Once I learned that Fred Zinnemann directed it I could not help but to think how he must have felt, he who escaped from Nazi Germany. If I remember correctly his parents died in a concentration camp. My one big complaint is that the film is called Julia, and the vast majority of the film is concerned with Lillian Hellman. Anyways I think it's worth a view.

A really terrible movie that was surprisingly nominated for Best Picture that year. While I wanted to know more about Lillian Hellman's story, most of it was uninteresting and poorly acted. Vanessa Redgrave was great, but Jane Fonda was aggravating. She thought that yelling meant good acting. Instead it was just a performance that got on my nerves. Her father could act, but she couldn't.
