Coralie Fargeat gifts us a body horror film for the ages with Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley expertly cast. Moore especially gives a standout performance as a once-award-winning actress now doing fitness videos who comes by an illicit drug that brings out a younger version of herself. Dennis Quaid has a small role but plays it to the slimy hilt. Agism and beauty standards are all too common - especially in Hollywood - and Fargeat knows how to twist it - blood, decay, mutation - in all its horrific glory.

A comentary-rich marathon of one Cronenberg-esque nightmare after another, "The Substance" is the rare movie where the performances, music, and visuals all match in their intensity. The sound design and effects are amazing too, and Demi Moore absolutely slays here in her Toni Collette (Hereditary) moment.
