Capone - Review

Did Capone kill or hurt Josh Trank's grandparents? Because making a biopic of a famous figure in history is not new, but I have never seen a biopic that humiliates someone into the butt of the joke, I cannot help but think there is some bad blood.

The infamous ‘Scarface’ shits himself multiple times, one time in bed with his wife (played by Linda Cardellini), where she's stained in his human feces. At one point, his iconic cigars get replaced by carrots as a strict diet for his already decaying health. So now he looks like a frosty bloated penguin.

Capone disintegrates before our eyes as he is diagnosed with Syphilis (in real life as well), and yet, for whatever reason, the filmmakers made him look like a guy who's slowly turning into a zombie. The veins in his eyes are bright …

Watch a gangster turn into a zombie in 90 minutes.

One of the most bizarre gangster films ever put on film, Josh Trank's biographical drama of Al Capone mixes a treasure hunt with pop psychology and surreal imagery and outright body horror.
And is there some body horror in Tom Hardy's physical transformation into the infamous gangster who's been rendered helpless by syphilis. His dedication to the most disgusting parts of his illness are commendable but the effect is grotesque and often sickening. Linda Cardellini is actually good here as his loyal but suffering wife who is forced to watch her husband's severe mental decline.
Apparently director Josh Trank hoped this would become his comeback movie after the failure of Fantastic Four (2015). Unfortunately that is not the case. But it's more interesting to watch.
