Relocating the Frontier Mythos

Legendary film scholar and theorical father of the French New Wave young filmmakers André Bazin once described the western genre as the “american cinema par excellence”, and there is little room to deny that. The whole concept of a more simpler time, governed by a rule of law that still oscillated between wild nature and civilized society, the men who inhabited these spaces and how they related to one another, it was all captured since the beginning of american cinema. However, the genre has evolved in multiple forms, and many countries other than the United States have turned their attention to tales of the old west.
