...und so wird aus einem der besten argentinischen Filme aller Zeiten, aus einem der besten Thriller überhaupt ein Hollywood Remake mit Julia Roberts. Zunächst einmal; was ist überhaupt gut an diesem Remake? Dass es die Handlung aus der Zeit der argentinischen Militärdiktatur in die Zeit nach dem 11. September transportiert. Auch nach den Anschlägen herrschte ein Klima der Angst. Die FBI Agenten Kasten (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Cobb (Roberts) und eine Staatsanwältin (Nicole Kidman) ermitteln gegen die Islamisten, doch kurz vor dem Durchbruch kommt ihnen eine Leiche dazwischen. Fortan wird mit zwei Zeitebenen gespielt, denn die Handlung setzt 15 Jahre später ein als das Trio noch einmal zusammen kommt. Some 'Secret's Should Be Buried

'Secret in Their Eyes' is not unlike a standard 'made for cable' mystery/thriller in it's presentation. There seems to have been a good narrative idea here. However, the focus isn't maintained in the right areas. Besides two really good scenes with Julia Roberts, all of the emotion and moral conflict brought up is not entirely addressed in a satisfactory manner. The direction would have us more interested in the procedural nature of your typical 'who-done-it?' instead. Those two main driving forces create a conflicting story progression that generates an off tone and causes substantial elements to feel hokey. The actors are our only source of any investment.
