This is not only a great documentary, but the definitive account of one of the most important, frightening developments in recent American society. As America flirts with the possibility of slipping into fascism, the subject matter of this film may sadly become more topical. Laura Poitras hat Edward Snowden während der Tage seiner Enthüllungen in Hong Kong gefilmt. Geschichte wird geschrieben - aus nächster Nähe. Snowden hatte über den Codenamen Citizenfour Kontakt mit der Filmemacherin aufgenommen und Dokumente versprochen, die beweisen, wie die NSA ihre Bürger ausspioniert. Acht Tage lang lief die Kamera, während Snowden die Journalisten empfing. Alles gipfelt darin, wie er sich selbst vor der Öffentlichkeit offenbart. Ein vages Gefühl von Paranoia schlägt um in Gewissheit. Obwohl Poitras so dicht dran ist an den Ereignissen, wirkt sie eigentümlich distanziert, fast kühl.
