The problematic "Deepwater Horizon" follows a generic disaster movie formula, but its real flaws are the underdeveloped characters and tediously slow start.

A very solid true-to-life story of the events leading up to the disaster that led to deaths of 11 men and caused the worst oil spill in U.S. history. Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg have teamed up before in another true-life story (Lone Survivor), and Berg has a good handle on bringing these stories to life. The characters are fleshed out enough that you care what happens, and the action sequences are harrowing. While it doesn't break the mold, it stands on its own and worth a watch.

Peter Berg continues his winning streak with DEEPWATER HORIZON, a blockbuster disaster drama about the ill fated oil right and the disastrous accident that happened back in 2010. The film wisely devotes the first act to introducing the characters from the seasoned supervisor (Kurt Russell) to the wily engineer (Mark Wahlberg) and the slimy executive (John Malkovich). Once the accident happens, it is a heart-stopping thriller that vividly recreates the traumatic destruction but also the heroic braver of those trapped on the doomed vessel.
