A dark and intriguing Y/A film drawing inspiration from Lord of the Flies, The Goonies, and even a little bit of Alien and Hook thrown in. As weird as that combination is, it works. The acting is good and the action is suspenseful. Unlike a lot of Y/A movies, it doesn't pull punches. The cliffhanger ending is unsatisfying though as I'm sure that it was meant to set up a sequel.

Maybe if I had read the book I would have gotten more out of this. As it was, it seemed like a weaker effort in the whole young adult post-apocalyptic genre of films that is becoming ever more popular. The film left more questions than it answered and just felt disjointed and not as interesting as the likes of The Hunger Games or even Divergent. I will check out the sequel, but I'm hoping it picks up (and explains a bit more) the next time around.

The storyline held my attention for the whole time without requiring much thought. Another reviewer accurately observed that this movie is like a mash up of "The Hunger Games" and "Lord of the Flies".
