With violence and twists that fail to make it equal the Korean version, this has to be one of the most impotent Hollywood remakes I've ever seen. Where Park's "Oldboy" was psychologically challenging, Lee's is just laborious. Where the original slashed into you like a jagged saw blade, this one cuts like a dull and rusty butter knife.

People who have seen the original will scoff at this remake - people who have never seen the original Oldboy will probably be turned off by the subject matter - it's no wonder Spike Lee found himself in a no-win situation and the film tanked hard. I, for one, didn't think it deserved that much hate - I though Sharlto Copley made an excellent villain - with an even more heinous and interesting back story than the Korean film. That being said, the violence is too cartoonish, the acting a bit too over-the-top (especially Josh Brolin) and it feels like a pale imitation of the original. But still worth a watch - and the end twist is still a killer.

The story is about a man is kidnapped and confined for 20 years and then, one day, is inexplicably released. He obsessively hunts the man responsible for his imprisonment. Along the way he starts an ill-fated relationship with a social worker and finds he is part of a much larger conspiracy as he unravels the mystery. This movie is awful just a ugly mess and I hate you spike Lee for ruining a classic revenge story and you had to make it a mindless blood porn movie.
