Star studded adaptation of Graham Greene's novel that dramatizes the political turmoil in 1960s Haiti under the rule of Papa Doc Duvalier. Everyone looks sweaty and the acting is sometimes melodramatic. But given how each character is quietly scheming and literally 'acting' a part, perhaps that's the gag. Alec Guinness is funny as a sleazy businessman pretending to be a war hero while James Earl Jones is commanding as the sly rebel leader. Lillian Gish and Paul Ford have a playful bit role as two elderly tourists caught up in the upheaval. Some scenes nail the sly satirical nature of Greene's novel while others (like Guinness in blackface) have aged horribly.
