'Heartbeats' is to art films what 'Face/Off' is to action films: a shameless, sincere, and outright masturbatory embrace of its own genre. It's a youthful folly of the precocious and unbelievably beautiful director and star Xavier Dolan. Yet in his obsessive (though by no means uninspired) homaging of Jean-Luc Godard and Wong Kar-wai, there are nuggets of genuine profundity thrown in - often in the film's 'talking heads' segments - that remind us that Dolan has not only the ability to be a talented composer of pastiches, but also one of the finest directors of the 21st century, perhaps even becoming the standard for queer cinema. He just needs to mature a bit first.
