This movie is a simple remade-ghost-movie that I can handle watching if I were bored and it happened to be on TV, but I didn't like it as much as I thought I would simply because it's very predictable and I felt as though they kind of tried to give it a sort of Japanese style like it's original, and that just didn't work.

I caught this movie on cable and was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the plot and I thought the suspense built steadily throughout the movie. I enjoyed the ending. It was rather cool. I watched this before viewing the original version. After watching the original so I could compare, I must say I wasn't disappointed with the USA movie. I thought it stayed pretty close to the original story. The changes that were made for American audiences worked just fine. I actually preferred some of the changes that were made. The original version is good as well, but I like this one just a bit better.

While it fails on all counts to reach the original's level, I didn't think this was a complete failure for a remake. It captured enough of the spirit of the original, unlike so many other remakes. It's inferior, but palatable.

Almost everything about Shutter is predictable. It contains very little amount of scare factor and the acting was poorly executed. Joshua Jackson's dull and usually dreary performance drags the film's potential to the point of failure. The antagonist does nothing new and did not really scare the bejeebies out of me. Her face is just too average to be that of a creepy symbol. The only thing that made something out of the ordinary was the whole gorgeous Japan scenery. Overall the chills were mild and the screams were shallow almost to the likes of a soundless library. Shutter is not even in the same category as that of The Ring, there's really no comparison.
