There's competent, even sophisticated, storytelling here, but the film's dependence on the mythology of the show on which it is based means X-Files virgins (a group to which I belonged when I saw the film) will be left with a feeling of vague disillusionment. Nevertheless, for cinematic spin-offs of TV shows, this is pretty much as good as it gets.

The familiar back and forth of Scully and Mulder will delight fans of the show, as will cameos from all of the show's most famous characters. However, the story is pretty standard and poorly told and people who aren't in on the show's many nuances won't pick up on a lot of the material. Taken as a straight sci-fi film outside of the show's legacy, it's pretty weak.

I love this film - one of my all time favourites. I can watch it repeatedly. It's great as a stand alone, and a brilliant x files episode. Love it!

Fans of the stalwart sci-fi series X-Files will undoubtedly be satisfied with this film. It works both as a stand alone and a compliment to the series. Though it has flaws, overall it adds to the rich mythos of the program.
