Morality tale of greed and betrayal that impacts three friends that find a cache of money and decide not to tell the police. Of course things go wrong. Very wrong. Bill Paxton and Billy Bob Thornton are solid as two brothers conflicted by their own greed which threatens their loyalty. The standout is Bridget Fonda as Paxton’s comely but calculating wife. The direction by Sam Raimi is very good. The tension just keeps piling up for these characters and forces them to make terrible decisions. Danny Elfman’s score is excellent at setting the mood.

Moving past the campiness of his previous cult classics, Sam Raimi directs this crime thriller resembling "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" set in the snow.

This unusually restrained piece from Sam Raimi is a superior Treasure of the Sierra Madre variant marked by a particularly fine performance by Billy Bob Thornton. It could've been fantastic if the lead was played by an actor with a range greater than the rather limited Bill Paxton.

Sam Raimi proves he doesn't need Spider Man or a haunted cabin to make a good film. Take a good story and some great characters and you have a recipe for success. While this isn't a personal favorite, it is a good film.
