"The Siege" by Yojimbo

Hollywood's new favourite bad guys, Islamic terrorists, make a series of attacks on New York City and FBI agent Denzel Washington squabbles with NSC agent Annette Bening over jurisdiction while trying to find and catch them. All very well, but then Bruce Willis' "renegade" general steps in to occupy the city and I begin to smell a political fish. With rent-a-Democrat Denzel accompanied by loyal and patriotic Arab-American sidekick Tony Shalhoub, quotes from the constitution and Bill Clinton soundbites it all looks very worthy and even-handed. But if you read between the lines, it's basically saying that if patriotic Americans don't let their country's heroic spooks do their job (ie do whatever they want) then the jar-head Gestapo will have to call martial law. Feels a little over done by todays standards

The Seige is the story of FBI agent Anthony Hubbard (Washington) who forms an uneasy alliance with secretive CIA agent Elise Kraft (Annette Bening) in an effort to stop a string of bombings by a cell of Muslim fundamentalists that is terrorizing New York City. When they catch some but not all of the terrorists, and the bombings continue, martial law is declared in Brooklyn and a military contingent headed by Gen. William Devereaux (Bruce Willis) comes in to finish the job, starting by imprisoning every young man of Arabic ancestry in the borough.
Although The Seige is somewhat disappointing, it has many good points. Hubbard is an admirable character very well realized by Washington. Watch him fight off tears when he fails to rescue the hostages aboard a bus, and see his literally bloody …
