An effective wartime drama

A nice story about the trials and tribulations of the people in a town during World War II. It centers around Mickey Rooney as Homer a young man who works at a telegraph office to support his family. His story is especially powerful, and very emotionally convincing with Rooney giving one of his best performances. Not all the stories work perfectly, especially not one involving another worker at the telegraph office, but most do and the ending of the film is truly a heart strings pulling conclusion.
