Though fairly slow-moving at times, The Last Laugh does a fascinating job of telling a simple, but stirring story through the juxtaposition of visual images. Murnau doesn't rely on the crutch of verbal exposition (save for one sequence near the end of the film,) but instead tells his story through his actors' emotive faces.
