The early Kevin Smith films are the best, before he tried to become more marketable. Clerks is definitely his masterpiece - a film about a collection of off-color slackers that happens to do a lot with very little. The strength is in the very funny writing and the economy of sets and characters allows Smith's voice to shine through brilliantly.
