I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry

Review - Chuck and Larry (2007)

Chuck Levine (Adam Sandler) and Larry Valentine (Kevin James) were two straight men, but Larry had the bright idea to marry Chuck and get domestic partnership benefits. Now they must fool the world in “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.”

I learned a lot of things from this movie. I learned that everybody on Earth that isn’t gay is “homophobic.” I learned that incest is supposed to be sexy (first scene). I learned that it’s impossible for two straight men to be comfortable with a kiss. Okay, that last one is a little truer, unless you’re an actor, but even so, the movie is nothing but one stereotype after another.

What’s funny about the stereotypes is that the entire movie is trying to fight against stereotypes. I don’t understand how you’re supposed to make a statement about how gay people are just like you and me and should be treated as such when the filmmakers treat them just as they say everyone else does.

As for the rest of the film, it’s all very forgettable, and even though I watched it less than 24 hours ago, I remember almost nothing from it.

“Chuck and Larry” is a poorly executed film that is too long for what it’s worth. If they had just kept it as a silly comedy and left out the message, it probably would have gone over better.
