Marvelous Moon Madness

"Moon" is essentially "Cast Away" in space and a rather impressive film to boot. "Moon" exceeds as a drama, mystery and a sci-fi film. With a 15 million dollar budget, "Moon" shows you get a lot of a little. ( Michael Bay...please take note). This indie sci-fi movie takes cues from classic sci-fi movies of the 80's such as "2001: A Space Oydessy" and "Slient Running", yet is able create something incredibly unique and original. The directing from Duncan Jones is one of the most strongest debuts from a director in a long time. He could honestly be the next great sci-fi director. In my opinion, Sam Rockwell is the most underrated actor working today, with such memorable turns in "Snow Angels", "Choke", "The Green Mile", and "Galaxy Quest". He does a remarkable job in a award cailber performance. Not a lot of actors in Hollywood could pull of this performace, but Rockwell does. Sam Rockwell's performance is best thing about this movie and it will be a crying shame if he doesnt receive an oscar nomination. There is also some excellent voice work from Kevin Spacey as a robot named Gerty.

"Moon" has some clever writing that keeps you guessing despite a little hiccup in the movie's trailer that i will get to later in my review. As i said above, it also makes you think about some society and science issues. Suprisingly, it has some funny dialouge too. "Moon" probably has of the best scores you'll hear all year. The score is award worthy all the way. Considering it's budget, there is some impressive f/x and great set design. "Moon" wouldve been a flawless film if it wasnt for some poor marketing that involves a trailer that sort of ruins the element of surprise in one of movie's crucial twists (avoid seeing trailer before seeing the movie). That really is the only flaw in this sci-fi masterpeice. "Moon" made me cry, laugh, and think. I loved "Moon" and put it up there as one of best films of 2009 and one best sci-fi films ive seen.
