For Colored Girls

A good try, just didn't turn out

For Colored Girls is based on the landmark 1975 stage play of the same (though a little longer) name, and in terms of literature, it's a pretty significant piece of work. Unfortunately, it doesn't transfer as well to the screen as people involved hoped. It isn't necessarily because the material is too heavy, it's more because the play is filled with poetic monologues, and when the characters break into them, it comes off as more odd than emotionally dramatic. The "coming-together" of the stories at the end doesn't gel as well as it should, in fact I was wondering who a couple of the characters were.

That's not to say this was a solid attempt with some good performances - particularly from Phylicia Rashad in a supporting matronly role and Kimberly Elise, who handles the the film's most dramatic moments with great talent. It's a shame she was overlooked.
