"Creature from the Black Lagoon" is an interesting movie about man's relationship with the planet. The underwater photography and special effects are nothing spectacular by today's standards, until you consider that special underwater cameras were invented just make the film.

The film involves a archeological expedition that quickly changes when the scientific team discovers a living, breathing fish-man... an evolutionary dead-end that has survived in isolation for millions of years. The main conflict is between two scientists, one who wants to study the creature in its natural habitat, the other who wants to kill and display the creature for monetary rewards.

I have seen this movie three times over the last 25 years. Most recently I watched it with my children to show them the basis of "The Missing Link" character in DreamWorks upcoming film "Monsters v Aliens". While watching the film, it suddenly dawned on me that the film was a major influence on Steven Spielberg's direction of "Jaws".

As always, I kept track of the tobacco use for my own SmokeScreeners project. "Creature from the Lagoon" received a SmokeScreeners rating of 4 Butts. More details are available at http://smokescreeners.org/post/2009/02/21/Creature-from-the-Black-Lagoon.aspx
