Windfall (2022)

A sleepy thriller that eventually wakes up

Windfall is about a domestic burglary gone wrong. For much of the movie, the tone is fairly light-hearted that serves to lull and amuse viewers and set them up for a much different ending than they were expecting. The film could have used more dialog early on, though it gets better towards the end. The burglar uncovers friction between the husband a wife, and through his conversations inspires her to rethink what she wants from life. A better film would have had more of this throughout the movie, with perhaps the burglar taking advantage of this gift opportunity to get more bang for his buck, given his personal motive for the robbery. The film's tension could have built throughout it's running time, rather than drastically increasing towards the end. But perhaps I'm trying to turn the movie into what I wish it had been, rather than reviewing the movie that was made. There is an argument to be made for movies that pull the rug out from under their viewers. For what it was, I enjoyed this film, especially when it reached its final destination. But it could have been more.
