Auntie Mame

Rosalind Russell's still got it, by golly!

Rosalind Russell really is the heart and soul of the classic comedy movie "Auntie Mame". Anyone else in the role of Auntie Mame would not capture both the charm and the spirit as Russell does just so effortlessly. The movie goes from one outrageous scenario to the other in the manner of a cinematic novel but the transition scenes do not hold up well at all.
The script is admirably ahead of its time in how it empowers its female characters-and women in general-and it should also be commended for challenging the prevailing social norms of its release date (the 1950s) which as it shows comically were often abhorrent by our standards.
The supporting cast all do a good job and the most important part of the story remains the bond between Auntie Mame and her nephew.
