Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

Sketchy Mock-Umentary Worth it's Weight in Laughs

'Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping' is a smart satirical slight against the current pop star lifestyle and culture of today, wrapped in a sketch like R-rated comedy. The mock-umentary filming style, and bevy of recognizable real-life celebrities, brings more credibility to the proceedings. The comic musical trio known as the 'Lonely Island' bring their brand of parody songwriting to the forefront with some hilarious new tunes that fit perfectly into the loose-form narrative. I was laughing a great deal right from the opening scene. Joke wise, the movie is more front-loaded with the best moments being before the halfway point. It does start to feel more like an elongated sketch as it wears on. I still had laughs towards the end, just not as loud as previous. The songs are the definite highlight, but there's enough other funny material to sustain the short runtime. It's a tight eighty (or so) minutes that goes by quickly. The spoofing of actual people in the pop music industry could not be more keen. For that reason I can't help but recommend this to anyone (fans of the 'Lonely Island' especially).
