Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

For Twin Peaks Fans Only

A prequel to the events of the once popular television show 'Twin Peaks'. Having seen the show prior (and being a fan), I'd recommend watching this after. Besides easing you into the material better, it would also be beneficiary due to the fact the film gives away all of the secrets of the show's driving murder mystery. This film feels at one with the universe of the show, but the surreal aspects become even more strange. This is a darker endeavor that almost becomes horror at times. More emphasis on the sex, drugs, and violence make use of the new R-rated format. There's harsh depiction of self deprivation with the Laura Palmer character. The downward spiral of a tortured soul. The whole film is essentially an ode to the fallen one. In that aspect it does succeed. However, the show's offbeat humor and quirky qualities are not present. It's mostly dark. The first thirty minutes could be axed entirely. They don't add anything, especially when none of those characters matter at all to the rest of the story. It's decent, overall, but I'd only recommend this to those who like the show.
