X-Men: Days of Future Past is worth seeing

The Avengers has set an unfortunate example for the cinematic super-hero. The success of the Marvel cinematic universe has convinced owners of other Super-hero franchises that their super hero movies need to be more then just good stories; they have to be commercials for future super-hero movies as well. This was prominent In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and it is present again in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Don’t get me wrong, I liked this movie, but it’s not the greatest X-Man movie ever as everyone is claiming. It’s pretty much on par in comparison to Singer’s other super-hero efforts. Good but not great. I’ve always loved the X-Men movies, but their quality has rarely stood out among other superhero flicks; This newest entry does not buck this trend.

The visuals are awesome, and it’s a lot of fun to see the various characters from all the other films in the series back in one form or another. Young Charles Xavier is explored some more, and Mystique’s slow transformation from loveable to malicious is becoming the strong point of the series.

I think my expectations were too high. The hype and strong early reviews touted this as a truly great superhero flick, but it’s pretty much just another X-men movie mixed with The Terminator. The movie doesn’t use its premise to its greatest extent, and the ending reveals the whole thing as just a convenient way to reboot the franchise and make more X-Men movies. There's nothing that ruins a movie more for me then for it to reveal itself as a commercial.

I kind of feel bad bashing on this movie the way I am, because It really is a lot of fun. The main characters are engaging for the most part, and the movie does a good job of keeping you firmly on the edge of your seat. It really is a very well directed movie. It’s clear that the filmmakers put a lot of love into this, as did the cast.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is worth seeing. It’s worth seeing for X-Men fans, and it’s worth seeing for movie fans in general. Just keep the following in mind: X-Men: Days of Future Past is a well directed studio agenda, not a great movie. Enjoy it while you watch it, because it is enjoyable, but don’t pretend it’s something that it is not.
