Texas Chainsaw 3D

Could have been a lot better

This is the only entry in the Texas Chainsaw franchise that I have seen, so there is probably a lot here I’m missing. Meaning: there are probably a bunch of things that fans of the series cringed at that I was unfazed by simply due to ignorance. If your looking for a review from a Texas Chainsaw fan then look elsewhere.

The movie starts off with a very cliché first half. I may have not seen the other Texas Chainsaw movies but I know the tropes of the genre when I see them. A teen girl and her friends go to a creepy old house in the middle of nowhere and are killed by some unknown evil (in this case some kind of chainsaw massacre guy,) they are promptly picked off one by one and at some point two of them have sex. I know the drill. It was boring. I was surprised how little original material it brought to the table.

Then after all but one of the characters (the only women who didn’t have sex) died and the lone survivor was rescued I readied myself to leave the theater. Then suddenly the movie didn’t end, it was only half way over.

The second half of the movie was a lot better, which isn’t saying much.

The girl (who it turns out is related to the massacre guy) ends up being caught up in this whole hillbilly revenge plot thing. In the end it’s not the massacre guy who is really the villain, but the people of the town who have a part in creating him, that’s actually kind of a refreshing twist on the story. Sadly though it’s not done as well as it should have been done, and the acting from all of the secondary characters is just absolutely awful.

I honestly sort of enjoyed this one despite myself. The first half was boring, but when the second half kicked in, I was actually surprised a few times by what was happening, especially the ending. I can’t say that it’s a good movie, but I can see were the film makers were actually trying to do something interesting with it, so I really can’t bring myself to hate it either.
