The Brave One (2007)

Jodie Foster goes vigilante.....

Detective Mercer “How could you pull it back together after all that’s happened to you?”

Erica Bain “It’s simple you become someone else….a stranger”

Reminded me of the 1974 Charles Bronson “Death Wish” whereby Jodi Foster's Erica Bain is driven by fear after a sadistic after-dark attack brutal attack in Central Park that leaves her fiancé Dr. David Kirmani (Naveen Andrews) dead and herself in a coma for three weeks. The savage attack has robbed her of her privileged security, peace of mind, and even her pet dog.

Unable to move past the tragedy and growing impatient with the police to find the men responsible, she illegally buys a 9mm handgun to protect herself and get her confidence back to face life on the outside. But one day she's shopping in a store, and a man comes in and shoots the clerk dead and Erica is forced to confront her fear head on.

Later taking a ride on the NYC subway Erica is accosted by two knife-wielding thugs who end up dead when Erica pumped four bullets into them before they could slice her up. Connecting the two shootings the police and local newspapers, realize that there's a vigilante on the loose but mistake the mysterious avenger for a man not a woman.

Terrence Howard is great as the policeman investigating the mysterious vigilante murders who picks up her trail. It’s amazing how one tragic event can change the course of one's life and we are privy to Erica Bain's thoughts which are shocking, crude and frightening because they are translated in a way that everyone can understand and be horrified with ourselves. The idea isn't a new one but Jodie's performance as Erica is convincing in terms of a woman who finds both release and horror in her new personification.
I can't agree with the message of this movie but Revenge is sweet and evil must be confronted and handled!
