The Extended Weyland-Yutani Universe comment

Added Serenity, since it's characters and situations were based on Joss Whedon's earlier scenario for Alien: Resurrection. Also, Serenity bears the familiar Weyland-Yutani logo, so it's immediately in the same universe as most of the films listed here.

My Favorite Movies comment

This is interesting... I took my Top Movie List, which had over 100 titles and was a mess, and used the advice from this blog to randomly select a top 10 from those titles: http://blogs.indiewire.com/pressplay/video-sight-sound-film-poll-ignatiy-vishnevetsky-on-how-to-make-a-random-top-ten-list
Strangely enough, the list turned out great! This list is almost identical to the list I would have made as a teenager (if you replaced Forbidden Planet with something by Kurosawa or Lynch, that is).

Top Movie List comment

Ah! I've found a solution; the top 10 will be selected using this methodology: http://blogs.indiewire.com/pressplay/video-sight-sound-film-poll-ignatiy-vishnevetsky-on-how-to-make-a-random-top-ten-list Stay tuned...

Jean Rollin comment

Rollin's "The Night of the Hunted" (not listed on FilmCrave) would also receive 3 stars, and would probably take second place.

Sequels comment

My main criteria for judging a sequel (or prequel, for that matter) would be how much it enhanced the original. None of these films diminished the original, I feel, and some of them are even better.

Top Movie List comment

By far the most difficult list to make. I debate not having a favorite film list, but instead just rotate it constantly. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, BARRY LYNDON, 2001, BRAZIL, BLUE VELVET, THE THIN RED LINE, SEVEN SAMURAI... all of these and more are more or less tied for my favorite movie, so the whole top 100 is honestly in (almost) random order.

The Extended Weyland-Yutani Universe comment

Updated to add Soldier, Screamers and Total Recall, all of which fit into the PK Dick canon with Blade Runner, apparently.

Sherlock Holmes comment

For the record, the current BBC "Sherlock" would rate about 3/4 and would probably take 4th place.

Prequels comment

Lessons learned: Do your superhero origin story first, not last. If you're doing a prequel to a drama, work in some sequel-ness, too. If you're rebooting a beloved sci-fi property, do a quasi-remake that sends the franchise in another direction.

The Extended Weyland-Yutani Universe comment

This list doesn't appear to make much sense, and it really doesn't. I'm going off of the vague assumption that all of these films occur in the same universe. Blade Runner is connected to Prometheus, which is connected to Alien, which is connected to Predator. Avatar references Aliens. Anyway, a fun list based on the most threadbare connections, to be sure.
