I was familiar with the scientific experiments done with apes such as Nim before seeing this documentary. What I didn't know, though, is the appalling fate of these chimps once their scientific use became irrelevant. 'Project Nim' was a shocker and an eye opener.

Focusing on Nim, a chimp torn away from his mum and raised as a human being (he was taught American Sign Language) so as to test Noam Chomsky's ideas on language and language acquisition (no need to go into controversial linguistic debates here, this is not a scientific documentary) what we end up witnessing is, bluntly put, animal cruelty at play. The fate of this poor ape is indeed harrowing and cannot but leave tearful: once the funding dried out and the leading researchers thought they had enough data to leave it, he …
